Best heater for a small tank?

My daughter got a small 7 gal. tank from her grandparents for Christmas. I bought a 25w submersible heater (can't remember the brand) but I do not like it.

It is difficult to adjust the temp. as the dial is completely enclosed in plastic and it is difficult to tell if you are really turning the dial at all. It also does not have an external indicator of what you are setting the temp at. Also because of the cold nights (we live in N. Calif.) there have been some temp. changes which I think are cause by the heater being too small.

What would be a good replacement for this tank?

Thanks everyone.

You know I have the same heater as you only a 50w. I don't know the name either but the whole dial incased with rubber thing is stupid. I had the hardes't time with that thing.

Anyway, I don't now if they make them that small but Ebo Jagers are the best heaters hands down. I'm sure many people here will agree with that. I would check it out and see if they don't make 25w. If not I'm sure they make a 50w.

I would recommend useing a 50 watt anyway, as personally, i don't think that 25 watts would be enough. I've never had an ebo jager myself, but have never heard of a bad experience with them. I highly recommend you check into one ifyou can find them. If not, I've had wonderful luck with hagan tronics. Both are fully submersable, and are quality heaters that keep the temp steady.

Off the subject, where in northern cali do you live? I was born at the fort bragg hospital, but lived in little river and mendocino.

hagen etronic 50W. i used it on my eclipse 6 and 12. works very well. get it online, it's cheap. it has a preset temp. say you want the tank water to be at 79F, set thet dial to 79, it will keep that way, will not overheat. 25W, 50W, 100W, makes no different (except for the size of course) if you have the preset temp. once the water is at that temp, the heater will keep it that way.

You can buy a 50watt Ebo-jager. Its the lowest watt heater they sell. I've got 2x150watt ones for my upcoming 77gal tank, but haven't used them yet. I have the same heater as well that your talking about and the rubber encased dial is a pain. You can't tell if your actually turning it or not, and when you can tell, your usually turning it WAY to far. But I found once I got mine set right, it was ok.

Ok . . . . first let me thank all of you for your suggestions. I will probably get the EJ as soon as I can.

In response to the last post though . . . I must take issue with that comment. How much do you know about N. Calif.? Now Central and certainly Southern CA (Los Angeles and San Diego for example) stay on the milder to warmer climate. I however live north of Sacramento at about 3000 ft elevation. It is not uncommon to hit freezing temps here at night and we have had the occasional snow as well.

So sorry to disappoint you but "cold" and "N. Calif." go together very nicely. :p

Sorry to take this post off topic.

Thanks again for all the advice.

:D Nah, down to freezing and snow still isn't cold! If its still snowing, its not cold! I think its called sarcasm... :)

If you really want to go all out, those new titanium and stainless steel heaters have been getting some pretty good reviews. Then again, if its not an issue, just get a cheaper hang on 50w heater. I've got a bunch of avant and Hagan "radiant" heaters that have been working very well for me.

Although I do have a Visitherm submersible that is the cats a$$. Reasonably priced too. Its got a dial indicator (tho its not very accurate) and is pretty easy to adjust.
