Been out of fresh water for a while and a friend's tank has ich. There are neons and other community fish in that tank and most of them have ich.

In the past, I've used both the salt and increase heat method and also medication with success.

Was wondering what the preferred method is now?

If medication, what's a good brand/type?

If salt, how much salt per gallon?

Thanks!

I would use just increased heat and more frequent water changes.
Both methods would remove the free swimming stage, which is the easiest part of their lifecycle to deal with.
Keep up both for 14 days should do it.

I use heat/salt.

1-2 teaspoons per gallon should do it.

Salt kills the free-swimming ich (or "thermonts"), and the heat has two affects... depending on the strain, it will prevent some of the population from reproducing, and those that do reproduce will move through their life-cycle much faster, allowing the salt to work in a shorter period of time.

In any case, keep the treatment up for a week after any visible signs of the parasite are gone.
