I will be buying a tank soon with the hopes of keeping some cichlids in it. I would like to keep Con's, JD's, or a GT. I have been looking at two options for my first tank. My first option is a 33 gallon (36x13x18) hagen kit. This setup is pretty well complete, as in I wouldn't have to change any of the components. My second option is a 55 gallon (48x13x22) walmart kit. The cost of the kits are almost the same; however, I think I would swap out the filter and heater and the walmart tank. What tank should I buy?

You'll need to get the largest tank you can afford. Convict ciclids, Jack Dempsies, and Green Terrors all have the possibility of growing >10" as well as being highly territorial and aggressive. Green Terrors are called Terrors for a reason, and tankmates of theirs should be given plenty of room to hide and stay out of the way.

The biggest i think a convict would get would be about 6 inches, never seen a 10+ inch convict.

You will need the biggest you will can afford, and if you cannot get a 55 gallon i would stick with the convicts for anything smaller. Like said above Green Terrors are very territorial, and will beat up on almost everything. Why don't you try something less aggressive like a Severum for the 55.

Good luck,
Daniel
