I had a male betta and a mystery snail in a tank together, and my betta died. I thought it was Finrot, but now my snail is sick and his shell has got little green specks on it. My question is...what the heck? Is it some sort of parasite? What should I do?

Ok, my snail died. Where I live there are no "real" pet stores, so I got the snail and the betta both from Walmart. I went back to Wally World today just to look...and...every single snail in the tank has got whatever it is. My question is...what is it? I'm so very confused right now. I new to this...but how many things affect both snails AND bettas? Was it maybe fungal? I'm very very frustrated right now. And the people at Walmart don't even CARE that they're selling things that are doomed to die. Oh yes, I am mad.

Sorry, I needed to rant a little there. Does anyone have a clue about this?

I've had the betta a while, I had just got the snail the other day, before the betta got sick. My betta was more sluggish for a couple days after I got the snail, and then I went to a friends house, and when I came back the betta was pretty much finless. I took him out of the tank and he died about 5 hours later. And then I notcied my snail has green specks on him, and...yeah. I went back to Walmart to look at the other snails, just to see, and every single one of them has that green stuff on them. And they don't care. That makes me more mad then losing my betta and my snail within 10 hours of each other.
Is it, like, fungus, or....? I'm completely at a loss.

I don't have any suggestions on the cause, but I am here to offer "ranting" splurges to. I also have to go to wal-Mart for my fish. I bought 2 tetras, 2 platys, i guppy, and a ghost shrimp on the same day last week and the guppy and one of my platys are both dead. Within like 2 days of each other and after only having them for about 4 days. Of course some of it may have been "new tank sydrome", but the other fish are doing fine. But regardless, just letting you know that I, too, am a fellow wal-mart cusser and they piss me off as well. I thought maybe the 2 fish did die because of nts, so I decided I would take them back so the others didn't die needlessly, ya know, they told me they would just flush them down the toilet!! I said well why can't you quarantine them for a couple of days and the girl said they weren't allowed to do that. Which is a crock because that is what they have to do with the fish that come in off the trucks! This was the girl in customer service saying that. It was the guy in the pet dept telling me about the truck thing. Well needless to say, I brought the other fish back home with me and they are doing fine. I am glad I didn't let them get flushed. Sorry to have been no help there, but when you get started on WM it is hard to stop! Also, my husban works at the Distribution Center here in our town, so I hte them even more on a financial and personel basis besides my fish! :) Anyway, good luck on finding the culprit.

I wonder if they actually quarantine them? you'd think they'd do SOMETHING instead of letting every single snail they've got die and run the risk of infecting every single fish? Even if it was killing the snails. How many peoples tanks are going to get infected?
