The lighting thing depends on your bettas. I know a lady on another forum who breeds halfmoons VERY successfully (shows and wins with her kids) and some of her breeding pairs prefer the lights off, while others don't seem to care. I would try it both ways and see which your pair prefers.

If your pair prefers lights out, then I would turn them back on once the female is out of the tank and the male is tending the nest. It'll make it easier for you to see when the eggs have hatched and when the fry are finally free-swimming.

As far as the eggs being clear...I believe they are mostly clear, but you can see the little fry eyes in them (similar to oto eggs).

It is recommended to keep the lights in the tank on 24 hours a day until the male is removed. this is from the time the eggs are laid until everything is free swimming.

I personally keep the lights on 24/7 until the male is out. I had problems with the male not building the bubble-nest when the lights were off each night, which resulted in a shrunken nest each morning. this prolonged the spawning process, and the female will probably reject the nest if it is not rather fluffy and complete. What did was leave the lights on once the female was in the breeding tank. on the next day the nest is usually complete (because the male was not interrupted at night) and the fish are ready for introduction-granted the signs are all there.

The eggs and fry look like this:

the eggs in particular are colored the same as the fry's yolk sac in this picture.
