Betta Help

My betta has just got started flaring and he also has cloudy eyes. Here are my water parameters as of yesterday.:

Nitrate: 40
Nitrite: 0-.5
hardness: 300
Alkalinity: 180-300
pH: 8.4

I currently added 3 Glowlite Tetras and some Hygrophila. Any help will be apreciated.

Your nitrite should be at zero, and your nitrates are a little high. Do a water change. What's the tank temperature?

Flaring all the time could mean the tetras are stressing your betta.

Well they are always on the oposite side of the tank. The last time I known my temp is around 76 degrees. I did a water change and I am waiting to check the nitrates.

It broke I have to use my friends digital one every once and a while to make sure. I need to get one very soon I know.

Edit: It was those chep little ones that cost a dollar, my mom is not willing to pay more then 5 dollars on a thermometer.

What about ammonia?
Don't know about the cloudy eyes. And he could possibly be stressed about the tetras even if they are on the other side. You never know with bettas, they are such little individuals.

Yeah I cant test ammonia becasue the test strips only come with the above(first post). I think on him flaring its because he is more settled into the tank and his color is more defined and he is happy. I just noticed that his eyes are normal. I did a 30% wc today because of my Nitrates so maybe he was just adgetated(spl) with that. But I will definitely get a thermometer within the next month and an ammonia test kit.
