Just out of curiosity, what is everyone's view on the Betta-In-A-Vase issue? I have been talking to one "betta expert" who informed me that BIAV is not only totally humane, but also more room than the betta actually needs, and i disagree. I was wondering if my views on this subject were totally stupid, as I think that BIAV is inhumane and wrong.

IMO, it just depends on the purpose of the betta in a vase.  If the person thinks the betta is going to eat plant roots or fungus on the roots, then I think they need to be tied up in a dark room for a long long time.  :)  If they just have a betta, in a vase, and FEED it and CHANGE the water, then, ok...I can live with that, because it is a pretty set up if maintained properly.

Here is what I think is beyond stupid.  I saw this today on aquabid.  A person is selling a betta, in a vase.  Thats all fine and dandy. BUT they are selling it with a floating candle in it.  LIT with Mr. Betta in there.  Now, I know the betta isnt going to attack the candle (well....it could happen) but we all know bettas will jump.  And my very well land right on that lit candle.  I dont see this as a good idea.

Ok....Im off my soap box now :)

i agree with amy taking care of the betta (feeding and cleaning) is ok but believing the things other people with no clue about bettas, and saying that you dont have to feed them is bad. go to www.bettasrus.com or petfish.net/lillybetta.htm

Another thing you have to consider is not only if they change the water and feed it properly but is the vase big enough? Those big vases are fine by me if done properly but the small ones where the betta just has to sit in the roots is horrible. :( But it can be done right. :D
