I have just returned to the hobby after a long hiatus and have recently (about 2 months ago) restarted a 10 gallon tank.  Currently I have a male betta and 2 African dwarf frogs.  I was wondering what would be a good addition to the tank.  I want to be careful not to overcrowd or add any fin-nippers.  Any advice would be much appreciated.

Ummm........lets see....... good tankmates for bettas most small gouramis such as honey gouramis, dwarf gouramies, or paradise fish would be good but, a little precaution on the paradise fish because they can be a bit aggresive. Corydoras catfish are good at cleaning up and the betta shouldn't bother them. You could even put a female betta in and try your luck on breeding your betta. *thumbsupsmiley*

Thanks for the welcome and the advice.  I have read else where that gouramies and bettas are somewhat related and might have some friction.  Any truth to that or is that just referring to the larger ones?

I have had them together before , i think that that rule might just apply for the larger more aggressive types such as the blue gourami or pearl gouramis :)

I had a honey gourami and a betta together, and the betta did nothing but chase and flare at my gourami, even though the gourami was in the tank long before the betta was introduced. I took the gourami out and put him with less dominate tankmates.  Some people have sucess with gouramis and betta's together, but I've never had. Most of the time or the other just can't keep chasing and flaring or leave the other alone.

White clouds and cories go very well with bettas. Most bottom feeders will do okay with a betta, and will leave a betta alone as well as the betta getting bored with them and leaving them alone. Bloodfin tetras are pretty mellow too.

Stay away from barbs, danios, and some larger tetra species, they can nip fins.

I have a betta in a tank with 2 blue gouramis, a kissing gouramis, and a golden gourami and there has never been any problems.. In fact, that particular betta tried to beat up everything in the other 2 tanks he was in...

We have a betta in a 3-gal tank with a Cory Catfish like suggested above.  They get along great.

But, I should mention that while we were setting up a 26 gal tank, we held 2 diamond tetras with him.  At first, he flared at them continuously = luckily the tetras are quick and knew to stay away.  After a day or so of flaring, we removed the betta.  Then, we waited two days and returned him to the tank.  He left them alone after that.  They lived together for over two weeks without incident. *thumbsupsmiley*

Hope this helps.

I have a Betta in my tank and he's doing fine with the Zebra Danios, Blue Danios, Iridescent Shark, Catfish Shark, and Kuhlii Loach.

I was wrong in putting in a Angel as the Betta was a fin nipper till the Angel could swim no more. :(

As you can see these dang bettas can be so different in personally it's hard to say who can be put with whom.  But I agree that you should stay away from most barbs and tetras.  I think you should try the gouramis.  Possibly white clouds, but they might make the betta nervous with all of their swimming. Hum. . . I still think you should try small gouramis.
