My betta's tail is split down the middle! Does this ever happen naturally as they age, or did something that wasn't supposed happen cause this? I'll try to get a picture up asap, but his rear tail is basically split in two down the middle. His fins all seemed normal until this afternoon when I noticed. :(

You betta has probably "blown" its tail from flaring. Mine do it all the time. Melafix should help it heal. Also, keep an eye out for fin rot, the melafix should prevent this from happening should you add it to the water.

Makes sense, 'cause I have a black background and he flares at his reflection there all the time when I have the lights on. Should I remove the black background to prevent this from happening again?

Yup, that's the one. Sometimes he just stares at his reflection w/o flaring, othertimes he'll flare nonstop. When he's not doing that he's usually looking around the surface waiting for me to drop food. :p Thanks for the help PreciousGems.
