I have a ten gallon tank with about fifteen fancy guppies and about five more fry, three new glowlight tetras, a cory catfish (bottom feeder), and an algea eater. I really want a betta fish. If I bought a tank for a betta than I would have to spend quite a bit of money and I don't really want to do that. I know that it would probably be bad if I put a betta in my tank but it does work for some people. What do you think? And please say why, thanks.

Your tank really has a lot more fish then it should for one reason. The other is that the betta can be very aggressive toward other fish in many cases. It seems you always hear about the one or two that had success but not the hundreds or more that failed. Its not fair to put chance to the fate of your pets. They are your responsibility to keep safe and healthy. You wouldn't put a pitbull with a full size poodle would you? Another ten gallon tank kit can be had pretty cheap and the big box fish stores, I see them for about 15-20 bucks on sale with a hood, light, heater, and filter. All you need is gravel and betta. Thats very cheap for a pet that will live for a very long time and be very happy!!!

Ok thanks, I checked at a pet store and they didn't have a very big selection of tanks but they had a couple that were 30 bucks for like 1 gallon. I think I will check at Walmart. Do I have to cyle my tank before I buy my betta? Should I try buying a betta and putting it in my community tank and watch it and if things don't work out then go buy a tank for my betta? What size do you recommend for just a betta? Would my betta be fine alone but beside my community tank?

I had a betta for years in a 10G beside my 40G tank, He liked to chase the cichlids in the 40G, he was the tough guy LOL. You can add fish to your tank at anytime, just be sure to do daily water changes to keep the ammonia and nitrite levels WAY DOWN!!! Until you are showing nitrate.

Your tank with the guppies, etc. is already stocked to the max. You can also try thrift stores or Craig's List for a small tank - just be sure its at least 2 1/2g, but I will admit, the smaller the tank, the harder it is to clean, so beware. I also know bettas are carnivorous and will stalk and eat any fry he can.

by algae eater is it a pleco? the common plecos can grow up to a foot long and really are very messy. that alone would justify at barest min. 10 gallon. they also may get aggressive as they get older (i've had some unfortunate fish deaths due to a past pleco of mine).

I would highly recommend getting a larger tank. you can probably buy a much larger tank for under $100 on craigslist. with a larger tank you can do more. and for 30 bucks you can probably get at least a 10gallon on craigslist.

for your betta you can cohabitate them with guppys WITH CAUTION. you should have a backup plan if the betta begins to show any aggression. again, i would recommend you take the forum members advice and buy another tank.

as for spacing the fish out in two 10 gallons, to be safest i would recommend betta, glolites and cory cat and guppys and pleco in a seperate tank.

A pleco needs about 100G to 125G tank minimum!!!!!! Not a 10 gallon????????? Please research before you post, try here: Freshwater Fish: Freshwater Tropical Fish Species for Tropical Fish Tanks

Apologies for the misinformation. But...the point being = exactly the same. that her algae eater if pleco = no good in the 10 gallon not even saying +guppys, glolite, cory cat, potential betta.
