Generally, it's not a realy good idea.  Many people have tried it with success while others, without :(
I suppose it really depends on the bettas.  It's best not to, but if you must, then I would do as luvfishies said.  Lots of plants and hiding spots

Try to stay away from fish with long or wavy fins, the betta may nip at them.  But also remember bettas can easily be picked on also, they are slow swimmers, they really float more than swim.  I had one in with a school of danios and they attacked him constantly.  I have had success keeping bettas and white cloud mountain minnows together though.  I think those two would be a good combination not only because of compatibility, but like bettas WCMM's do fine in a non heated tank.  Plus they are small and you can have more of them in a tank then other fish, you could have a nice school of them.

if you love your fishies, dont do it.  The femaled will kick your males butt...and the poor guppies wont have a chance!!  I keep mine in jars or goldfish bowls.  I set up a nice 10 gallon tank for my favorite female....a DT HM blue marble....she's livin' it up, lol.  Maybe you could do something like that.  Fix your tank up as a nice display tank for your favorite fish.  Give her/him a mystery snail for company....they cant kill those!

I had a male betta in a small tank with a pair of guppys. Yee Gods! The guppys were constantly reproducing. The betta will consider the fry as food. Sometimes the parent guppys will too. It seemed like every 3 days, we'd see clouds of newborn guppys. Between the betta and in filter intake......... We finally had enough and just kept the adult male guppy which is fine with the betta. Once the guppys are about an inch long the betta ignores them.

In another tank, I have some black neons. One was kind of a bully, driving off tank makes from "his" area. Then I got some zebra fish and that black neon learned his lesson. I swear the zebras are a bunch of hooligans.  *laughingcryingsmiley*They chase everything else. Kind has that black neon cowed. Unfortunately, betta is cowed as well. They go zooming around the tank.
