hi,

on sunday i bought a Superfish Aqua Pro 2 ext filter for my jewel 180. after reading the next to useless instructions, i finally got the thing together and tried to start it up.

now i am brand new to the ext filter game, so please bear with me.

huge amount of air bubbles trapped in the pipes and so it would run for about a minute and then stop.

i looked for advice online and found a helpful link on youtube about installing ext filters. no where in the instructions had it mentioned cutting the pipes so there where no loops. sounds dumb i know, but like i say, i'm a complete novice.

so i've cut the pipes, refilled the cannister, primed the thing and it will now expel air bubbles about every 20 to 30 seconds with a big expulsion of air approx every minute.

it sounds like a terrible case of indigestion coupled with a crackling noise from the cannister which after about 2 hours became continuous.

so i've turned it off and am extremely fed up with it. everyone seems to rave about these ext filters, but i now have 2 pictus cats, a RTBS and 9 barbs holed up in a 60L tank staring longingly at the unusable jewel.

please please please help me!!

sometimes you have to prime them multiple time to get the air out
i have an old magnum 350 its probably 7 or 8 years old when i clean it out and refill it i have to turn it on let run for a couple of seconds shut it off let it prime and start it back up some times it takes 3 or 4 tries seems like some of these canisters get an air pocket around the impeller that is a pain to get rid of

Check and double check again for any leaks or any place where the seal might not be good, or something might be cracked or just not a good connection letting air get in.

Also in addition to what 89must said, I find it useful in tilting the filter to one side to help expel extra trapped air when I do maintenance on my canister filters. I'll often tilt them on all 4 sides to do this.

thank you for your replies.

after a total of around 8 hours in all spent trying to discover where the air was getting in, i figured the filter had to be faulty. so it's all packed up and i will be returning it to swop it for a fluval.

so i truly hope i will be returning here with good news and happy fish very soon!

thanks again.
