Bio balls, good or bad?

I found these "bio balls" on ebay. Do you think they will work well as filter media?

did ya catch the sq.footage in terms of surface space?not that great compared to ceramic and other earthen based materials.at the price they are offering,and the size of each bioball,eheim substrat is a far better buy for about ten dollars more.bioballs still work fine but modern technology has really put there usefullness on the shelf,not in your filter.

yeah ditch the bioballs, go with biomax by hagen or matrix by seachem, each liter of matrix (intrenal and external) has as much surface space as 40 liters of bio balls

They are alright as a filter media. Will eventually become nitrate traps.

I really think it is very good price for 1000 pcs. Now don’t underestimate the effect of bio balls. Here is a site to tell you why.
