I beleive that most on here don't like to use bioballs because they trap debri and raise nitrates. Live rock and power heads, with a good skimmer seems to be the way to go.

What I am planing on doing is a sump system with a mechanical filtration compartment with bio balls and carbon then a compartment for protien skimmer and such then a refugium then the return pump.
Would it be better to fully leave the bio balls out?

I agree and if useing live rock rubble I suggest placing it in a media bag so that you can take it out while doing water changes and rinse it in the change water....that way you dont get a build up of debris in the rock.
