hi, i was thinking the other day about cheap substitutes for lava rock that you could use in your canister filter. i dont like any of the "rock" type bio-media not b/c it isnt good, but b/c i hate the fact that little chunks weather and break off.

anyone use bio-balls in their canisters? maybe legos? hair curlers?

ok, i have my eheim configuration set up the way i like now.

instead of this order (the recommended): plastic noodles, coarse sponge, bio-media, and the fine pad on top.

i did this: plastic noodles, coarse pad, fine pad, legos all the way up!, then another fine pad at the top.

i like having the fine pad BEFORE the bio-media, which prevents chunks from clogging the media pores.

it also makes it much easier to do maintenance on IMO.
