I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but...

what should I use for bio substrate in an aquaclear 150? i can buy one of those aquaclear amrid bags, but the description doesn't make it clear if it works due to sustainable bacteria cultures or due to a chem reaction w/ ammonia. also the description says to change it each month.

now, should i use that, or go w/ my gut feeling and get some eheim or fluval substrate, throw it in a mesh bag and put it in the filter?

I think you mean bio filtration, i use three sponges in my ac mini(actualy 4 because one is stuck on my intake) this works for me you just rinse the sponges in old tank water(or dechlorinated water. Or you could buy some other biological media;biostars, ceramic rings, or like you said pick a fluval or eheim bio media that says something about bacteria on it. you can put this in an old carbon bag. I believe the amrid is chemical since they want you to replace it.
