Bio Wheel

I have a 10 gallon tank which has been running for a little over a month. I am using a Top Fin filter with "White Diamond" crystals to help control ammonia. I was wondering if I should ditch this and get a bio wheel? Use both? The less-than helpful people at Petsmart advised me to use the crystals, but I don't know if I really need them. Is there any use in putting a bio wheel in a 10 gallon tank? If it helps, I have a male betta and 2 African dwarf frogs in the tank and by all of my tests come out perfect except my ammonia count is 0.5. Any advice would be appreciated.

White Diamond sucks up ammonia....therefor damaging your benefitial bacteria colonies because it sucks up their primary food source. In a properly stocked tank with adequate filtration and maintance you dont need this. Your tank still hasnet finshed cycling thats why you still have an ammonia reading. Read about the nitrogen cycle. I would suggest you remove the white diamond and replace it with some other media floss or something. As long as your tank has a turnover of around 6 times per hour or more it has adequate filtration. The tank isnt heavily stocked with a betta and 2 african dwarf frogs either.

I've never used a TopFin filter so I dont have a clue how their media places are. But I would use some bio media like ceramic rings or glass shavings, something like that or maybe some activated carbon. After a week or sos use carbon isnt good for much more than bio filtration. You need some floss in there for mechanical filtration so the water is crystal clear. Sponges are good places for bacteria to colonize as well :)

I use an old saltwater wet/dry filter on my 10 gallon. It has 8 bio-stars, and it works great.

I also like it because it doesn't have a huge current comming out.

I love bio-wheels, and an addition of one can't hurt you any.

You can always put it on another tank if you need to as well.

True as Matt says however I dont think it is required for a 10G (hmm, as luvfishies says *thumbsupsmiley*).
