Hey guys, i've got a proquatics filter for my tall20, and given the nature of the filter and waterflow, its got plenty room for biobeads to grow bacteria on it. So my question is this. what can i use that i can find around the house in place of the bio beads so i dont have to buy them :D

hey catfishmike :)

thanks for the idea about the filter sponge, i've got some stuff to chop and throw in.

proquatics fiters are very neat in my opinion. What first attracted me to them is the space in the filter itself to add in what
i mentioned before for bacteria growth. The filter itself can be a bit of a pain, setting filter media in it can be a little tricky simply by the nature of how the filter works. Water goes in through the uptake tube, then is routed to the bottom of the filter and up through the tube shaped filter media. which also allows flow control (theres also flow control on the uptake tube strainer, you can set the size of the strainer slots, it can be a pain however) Once the water comes up through the system at the bottom, it hits the filter media, which you can also add small bags of carbon which must be soaked completely before you add them in the filter, the floss bad the carbon comes in is rather thick. Then the water flows through the floss container and back out into the tank. Now, the filter media can be expensive, 5-7 usd for one replacement. But they last a while and you can also simply buy new wrap around floss if you choose, but i havent used it yet. This filter is cool for one reason in particular, its setup in a way in which you can design your own DIY filter media built in layers or still use the same wrap around function. I plan on expiramenting allot with this filter once the tank is cycled. It could pay off... I know i can already make my own carbon bags if needed. but overall, i'd rate this little bad boy an 8 out of 10. Considering the design, price for initial purchase, and possibility for diy media, this filter has potential, they simply need to make a few things less flimsy. Tomorrow ill chop up some sponge and toss it in the filterbox. Oh, and the floss filter media for this HOB is very effective, doesnt look like most floss seen in common whisper hob's.

you know what i think i may just pick one up.i have looked at them many times in petsmart,i'm just a little leary of anything i can only get one place.one thing you may want to think about is those cheap whisper bags.i just hack 'em up and wrap 'em on anything i can.and the price is about half for double the quantity.on my emperors i shave off the old floss and slip on a new tetra tec pro2 bag.it comes with a good amount of carbon too more than a oem emperor cart.have you seen cell pore media, this is a good bio-media if you can find it,the only catch is you must be sure that no excess gunk gets pass the floss or else it will clog and reduce flow.your lfs should have some it comes in small blocks that you could break up yourself.that hurts alot though, i did that once so i could use a cart. that i bought as an aftermarket repacement for the media tray offered when you buy an emperor.

I have one cheap hob, i forget the name of it, but its basicaly identical to the whispers and uses the same filters. so i've got some on hand. Once this tank cycles and i have a descent bacteria culture, im going to pull the old filter and see what kind of latered filter cart. i can make out of the old frame. The new cart i have has the floss already attached to the frame, which new carbon bags. The frame being vitall to the filters funtion. im looking at the replacement cart right now, and im thinking, if i pull off the old floss, wrap it with some type of stiff plastic, and make an opening around the top to allow water to flow into the bacteria cultures, i can make a nice layer'd system, almost like a mini vertical sump. hell, i could even use aquaclear media with this. but only if i cut the pads in half because of the water tube that comes up the center. If ya pick one up, give me your thoughts. two minds are better than one :D

have you ever seen an ehiem liberty hob i think they have the same idea as you except they have multipul carts.as far as the mini vertical sump take some of those frames shave them down, get some of the plastic fror the back of your tank the kind you cut to fit in your acessories to create a brace and wrap each one with floss each time increasing the micron straining efficency so that the last has very fine mesh.then in any unoccupied space fit bio-media in.i think this is wandering into the d.y.i. section lol.

In a few ill be adding chopped sponge, ill add updates on that later. However i wanted to comment on the heater i have. its also a proquatic. all i have to say is that it works great. with a digital temp reader :) and doesnt allow over turning of the presicion thermostat. and fully submersable. looks like proquatics might just be a force to recon with hehe
