Myhusband thinks it'd be cool to have a black light - one of the glow things in the tank for night time. Is this a good idea. Does it effect the fish? Is there a better, cooler idea than that?

Blacklight no good without very super filtration. The tiniest particles will show up and make normally gem-clear water look cloudy. You'll want to probably stack carbon in line with diatoms...I really cannot guess as to what kind of filtration would be needed.

Also, a 15w tube blacklight might reveal weird stains on your walls (or ceiling) that'll make you run and fetch industrial solvents then hire a painter.

...Happened to me once. I'm better, sort-of. Skittles seem to help. :/

Oh, hey, grats on the graduation NoDelta!

Black light or ultraviolet (UV) could be quite damaging to your fishes eyes. It's very harmful to human eyes and skin. Thumbs down on that idea.

Yep, moonlights would be a good alternative (as Micah mentioned).

There are a lot of suppliers of these products. Most LFS's also sell moonlights, which are also called "lunar" lights. You can check online stores like BigAls and DrsFoster&Smith, or you can check EBay.

Good luck!
