I have a 29 gal., got 6 mollies in it. 3 black 3 silver. i have been treating it with ick meds. It clears up but then breaks out again. My female black mollie was clearing , but now she is swimming around with her head down. She can't get her tail end up. any thoughts on what to do? thanks.

what kind of ich meds are you using and how long are you treating them for? if you arent doing a full treatment then the ogranism may still be in the water and re affecting your fish.... maybe you should try the salt and heat method, i have heard this works really well and is less stressful on the fish because they are not getting dossed with meds all the time... not sure exactly how to do it but maybe someone else will explain the salt/temp method for you.

I would raise the temperature to the mid 80s (do this over the course of a few days, don't just crank the heater up ;) Let the little fellas get slowly acclimated to the higher temp....
Then add the recommended dose of aquarium salt to the tank. It's really pretty cheap, look for this on the store shelf:

Keep doing water changes and dosing with salt for about ten days - this should stop that nasty ick cycle in it's tracks! :)

Thanks for the reply. I have been useing ick tablets, been doing this for about a week. Doing water changes every other day. Doing one today. I also had put some salt in, but not much. I will try the salt method. She is still alive, floating around. She is trying to swim straight but it is hard for her. My gravel is getting real dirty, but afraid to clean it. don't want to stir up anything else. Ok off to do the water change, thanks for the help.

I would clean the gravel...that's where the ick is living and reproducing....just waiting for a host to latch onto. Just try to be gentle and not stir up a ton of junk...that would probably stress her out.

Ok done the water change and added the salt. Also i vacumed the gravel as best as i could. She is still going. Still signs of ick on her and the silver mollies. Should I do a water change every other day or wait longer then that? The funny thing is the other black mollies I have is there one female and one male are protective of her when the silver mollies come around. The silver male is the aggressive one. Well thanks for the help. Hope she makes it.

How is she doing this morning? Hope she is feeling and looking better :)

I really couldn't even gander a guess at how often you should do water changes at this point. If it were me, I would do a moderate one every couple of days, say 10% or so, and try to do this by gravel vacuuming, this way you get rid of the ick spores that are *hopefully* dying off and dropping to the bottom and giving your little guys some nice clean water, too.

Just make sure to match the temperature in your replacement water, and to add the appropriate amount of salt into the new water, as well, so you aren't just continually diluting the salt content in the water. What's your temperature at?

The temp. is at 80. looks to me she is doing better, she is trying to swim straight. like she is gaining more control of he body. Ill just keep doing the changes and salt and hope all works out. I don't want to lose her I want some babys out of her she is real pretty. And she is the only black female the black male seems interested in. *thumbsups

it seems to be doing better. The signs of ick are leaving. But my female (which is the one that had real bad ick) she is swimming better, but she looks like she has a broken tail. If that makes any sence. You can see a hard bend in the back half if her body. I can not believe she is still going i thought she was not going to make it.

over time it should heal. as soon as the female is fully healed for a few days I recommend seperating the males from her but not move her. So she doesnt get stressed and it will make her heal and get back on track eaiser
