Hi All,

I have a problem with one of my Goldies. He seems to have these black patches on one of his gills and under his chin. He also seems to be struggling when he is swimming (not badly but enough that you can see he is probably stressed)

He used to have a little patch of this on his side but that dissapeared by itself.

I don't know what he has and I don't know how to treat it. Is it velvet ?

I have attached a photo of him and maybe someone will be able to recognise it.

I have done a water change but it still looks a little sickly :-(

Thanks in advance

Cheers

J

Well the levels are extremely low. The test shows close to nothing in the water. If I look on the scale it is completely clear. The water does not even turn yellow from the test. Definitely very low content of amonia. Same with the Nitrite and Nitrates. and the PH sits about 7.5/8.

My other little goldie which is about half the size of this one is not getting sick at all.

The numbers are basically zero. Definitely not in the toxic areas at all.

There is no change to the water colour when I do the test for both Nitrite and Nitrate. The tank has been completely cycled (used to have high Nitrite readings in the beginning).

The tank system is about 4/5 months old now ....

If this is the 30L tank it is not even 8 us gallons. In most cases this tank is considered too small for even 1 goldfish. May be why there has been soo many sick fish so far. My guess is that since it appears ypu have had a few fish have problems with floaty behavior they may have had too much stress and some damage from cycling since the tank is over stocked. Depending on how many fish are in here you need to be doing Partial water changes a few times a week. Have you switched from the flakes to a sinking food also?

I have only 2 goldies in the tank. One is about 1 inch in length and the other about an inch and half. The filter does not seem to be having a problem with just these 2 fish in the tank at all. I also have the bio star thingies in the filter that seem to help quite a bit with the filtration as I never see a spike in any of the tests that I do to the water.

I do a water change every week, along with syphoning the gravel to get rid of any "nasties".

The larger of the 2 fish is the sick one. I took him out the tank and placed him in another one with shallow water so as not distress him. I used the water from the original tank in this. I also added a little bit of rock salt and some more treatment for swim bladder. Now he is swimming around very comfortably (not floating on his side and on the bottom), though I will be keeping him in this container for a while longer, partially changing the water every day or so and feeding him to get him back to good health. Only then will I put him back into the original tank.

Could giving too much light cause a problem with goldies ? I know algae is a problem, but could having the light on for too long effect them also ? Is there a prefered time of day to have the light on or off ?

Usually you only keep the light on durring the day off at night. I am more worried about the tank causing stunting that will effect the growth of the fish and the development of the air bladder. Even with great water quality this small of tank will lead to furture health problems.
