They are, or look like, albinos. Albinos are white with red eyes, not red with red eyes. I know new discus strains are becoming availible now that are albinos with a body color....but no where near this fake red.

If i had to put money down though i'd say its an albino injected with dye. They don't look all that great anyway.

Considering that thread says they are not in the US yet, and the person posting has some and is located in Singapore, it makes me have another reason to look down upon the asian markets for such things. Don't bring these to the US, don't breed them...please. Asian markets, home of the blood parrot, flowerhorn, and now this oscar??

Normally I wouldn't chime in about oscars since I'm completely inexperienced when it comes to these, but I recently saw some zebra danios in a LFS that had the EXACT same coloration...

I forget what they called them, but the guy at the LFS told me that they were actually created by the manipulation of genes...

His explanation was that they took some anenome/anemone sp? genes and included them into the mix, which resulted in this new color strain.

He assured me that it was not a result of dye injections of any sort.

I asked how long these have been around, and he claims "about 2 years."

Glofish yes. But i can assure you glofish don't really Glow, they have a nice red tint. Nothing compared to this or a blood parrot.

The more i look up this fish the more i realize i was to harsh at first without having enough info about it. However if it is dyed i stick to everything i said in the first post. That last picture just makes me say dyed, it screams dyed. All the other fish havenatural colors, so it can't be the light?

I agree Matt, I don't see how it could not be dyed... or glofished with fluorescing genes. It's not like the Blue Dempsey, which is a pretty rare and amazing fish, in that you can tell it's selectively bred but still retains natural colors.

Lol!
Did you guys read what I posted, or did it just sound like a bunch of B.S.?!

Sounded like a plausible explanation when the LFS guy told me about it, but maybe I'm just out of my gourd to actually believe him!

What do you think...about the coloration theory I mean...not about my state of mental health? ;)

I don't know anyhting about Oscars but I have seen dyed fish before. I am not at all saying that this fish isn't dyed but I am inclined to comment on the "perfectness" of the coloring. I mean it isn't blotchy or off color in any areas or anyhting. How would they be able to get it perfect like if it did indeed turn out to be dyed? If it is natural it is beautiful! I mean it is just SO intense, ya know!

if i knew for an absolute fact they werent dyed, id love to have one. only reason i think they arent dyed or injected is because of how well the color is around his fins and such, im sure he has grown a little, sure the dye couldnt spread?

on the blood parrot thing the description on the website is complete BS! although i dont recoment these fish both my sister and my mother have one, but not the dyed strain, they both have the red ones, anyhow on the website it says can be housed in a 35 gallon because they will only grow to the size of it?!?!?!? so far i have never heard of any fish that just stops growing due to small housing.
