Last week my Blue Acara pair spawned *BOUNCINGS this is the first spawning that I know of and Mum and Dad have been great!

The babies hatched 4 days ago after Mum and Dad moved them from a flat rock to the back of the tank and once free swimming the amount of babies was huge! numbering probably around 1000.

Sadly in the 4 days since the other tank occupants have been picking them off and I estimate about 100 are left. Its extremely interesting to watch as I always thought the Tiger Barbs would be the biggest threat but the parents have kept these guys in check and its the RTB who is the biggest culprit they are so SLY and my one is unbelieveable in his quest for a few fry (Considering the size difference between him and Parents!).

I've moved 13 babies into a breeder trap for the time being to at least save some of the first brood, I'll post some picks of the pair and the surviving fry later :)

An update!

All the babies have been eaten! The parents did a valiant job protecting however whenever I fed the tank the parents would abandon post (How greedy :)) and 9 days after free swimming the last few babies disappeared.

I didn't have time to setup a new tank for the 13 babies I had in the trap so I released them back to the parents.

Its all been a fascinating learning experience and next time I will be ready to remove the fry and get them into a grow on! I've got the 30 Gal empty so that would be the perfect tank to setup and get cycling.

I've lowered the temp in the tank now back to 23-24C so they are unlikely to spawn again for now, the original trigger did seem to be the flat stone on the gravel and raising to 28C

Watch this space.....
