my bf is looking at getting a blue crayfish for his 120 gl african cichlid tank. it has a sand bottom with plenty of hiding for either fish or the crayfish. is this going to be an ok idea. these things r not cheap and he doesnt want to waste his money. and will it be get out of the tank?

i had one 2 or 3 years ago.if the cichlids a big enough they should be ok.but on the other hand it only lasted 3 weeks befor he was eaten. i think they got him between shell changes.

those sound like theyd rip a crayfish a new one. id reccomend trying out a regular 99cents (here anyway:D) crayfish first, just to save the time, money, and headache. i suppose that wouldnt be that great for the test dummy crayfish, but it would be better then losing 30-40 bucks over a blue. never know, it might find a good hiding space in the tank and be set.:D

I reckon you're asking for trouble, if the crayfish can catch 'em he'll eat 'em. On the flip side a big cichlid would love a nice lobster for dinner!

Also, sorry to be picky but an african set up should be just that, remember that all those species are endemic to thier relevant lake. if you want to add some other stuff why not look at some of the nicer syno's? Multipunctatus is a good bet and doesnt get too big.

All the blue crayfish in the fish stores I go to are always kept with goldfish and koi, so Im thinking they may prefer lower temperatures. (This would ofcourse need researching, its just an observaion).

I alos agree with Offish (great name :)) that an African set up would look best just with africans, but its all down to you :)

i have a two dollar gray one and i just make sure that there arent any spaces on the cover that he can fit through. I gave him a five gal with some feeder gold fish. he likes to nip them when they sleep. he has torn alot of them apart. for this reason i dont keep him with my cichlids. i was also told that the cichlids will kill him when he molts. if your bf really wants to try i would tell him to get eh cheaper one and see if he fits in well with the tank then get he more expensive one. i do not no though if the blue cray fish are less aggressive.
