My university had a fair today, with all of the clubs trying to support their clubs by offering prizes. Sounds like fun, right?
Well, as I was going to my classes, there were some feeder goldfish that people were carrying around that they said they won from the fair, and I was like, wow, thats pretty neat, I should go check that out...but the fish they were carrying around looked pretty ill...
The part that's both ironic and sad, you'll understand in a minute.
The "science club" was the club giving away the goldfish. By the time I got to the fair (around 1:00pm) all of the feeder goldfish were dead...there were a few swimming around...now let me explain what they were contained in...
In a single 10 gallon tank was housed around 50 goldfish(all dead by the time I arrived)...the tank was only half full of water, and there was no filtration or addition of oxygen into the tank. They probably didn't treat the water(high pH around here...probably chlorine), and just dumped em in cold water.
I know at the pet store there are similar conditions, but they have filtered tanks with some oxygen in the water.
I just find it ironic that it's the "science club" that was giving away the fish, and didn't know, or stop to think for a second what they needed to survive until they were given away.
I just shook my head in amazement, and then one of my residents (I'm an RA on campus) comes up and says "i know you have a few fishtanks, I thought you might like these."
It was a bag of 2 dead goldfish, but I don't know if the resident noticed that.
I said "thank you" for the thought, but man, it was kind of a sad scene...ironic, sad and stupid...sounds like an album title.
