I saw some female bettas my local pet store and was wondering how easy it is to breed bettas? Is there a ratio that needs to be kept (i.e. 2 females to 1 male)? Is there anything special I need to consider?

Hi KiemRaekerm,

Betta breeding is different than most other fish. There is no male/female ratio per say, 1 male needs to be introduced to 1 female in a specific way using a specific setup.

The actual mating part of the breeding is fairly easy to learn, its the constant live food feeding, changing 50+ jars twice a week (all the males need to be jarred at 3 to 6 months) then trying to sell anywhere from 50 to 400 bettas to stores at only $1.00 each.

For breeding instructions visit:

Prepare to spend 15 hours per week on feeding and water changes. Oh, and about $300 in tank setup, live food and other accessories your going to need to breed them.

Here is my first betta breeding diary:

Good Luck!
