I tried to breed bettas a few years ago. I was never successful at getting the fry past the first few days after the male is gone, but I can tell you what I did to get them there, and what I would guess I did wrong.

I set him in a 10 gal that was 1/3 or so the way full, with some plants to structure a bubblenest arround. Ive seen people add a styrafoam(sp?) cup, I dunno how well it works, but it looks like it should. I didnt wait for any specific size, just untill one was there. If he needed a little influence to build one, placing the female in a jar in or next to the aquarium worked. Then I just put them togeother and let nature take its course, unless one became particularly ragged. After there were eggs, and they werent showing an intrest in each other I took the female out and let the male take care of them for a few days. I cannot remember how long I waited, probably by whatever time Id read in some book was good. If you want, leave the male in untill he eats the babies, and next time take him out one day earlier.

Soon after this point I ran into trouble. I cannot remember what I had tried to feed them, but it probably was too big, and after the egg sac ran out they probably starved. Or, I had not covered the tank, and I have heard that the babies are prone to respatory(sp?) problems if the air over the tank is cooler than the water, or just cool, Im not certain.

Thats about all of the hands-on experience I have had with them, and I wish you more luck than I had with them. :)
