It's impossible to externally tell the difference between male and female oscar :(

You would have to vent them which means to take them out of the water and look under their bellies. "Generally" males would have the long gential papilliae and the females have a rounder one.

If any experts wanna chime that's fine, seeing as I am going on a generality

I'd go with bluetorq. Oscars are one of the most difficult cichlids to sex. Venting is the best means or an easy way to sex them is to wait until they pair off. But venting an Oscar is no easy deal. Even a heavy weight champion would find it hard to hold an oscar upside down.

Well, your first thing off is to get a pair of Oscars....and for that you should have a 125 gallon tank. A 75 may work. If you want to start from scratch, get 6 youngins, and you will get atleast two that pair off. Make sure the pet shop will take the other 4 back when the time coms, because 6 oscars need a good size tank. I keep 4 in my 180. Big fishies when they are all grown up.
