hello all,

i recently invested in a brine shrimp hatchery and my first btach of eggs arrived in the mail today.

the eggs are ' Sera Artemia mix brine shrimp eggs' the packet contains 18grams of eggs. the instructions say to pour the entire contents into 500ml of tap water (ill be using my tank water). the packet then says that this 18grams of bs eggs is enough for 1 days feed!

my question is, is it possible for me to you only 5g of eggs in 500ml of water and save the rest for other days ?? or do a HAVE to use all of the eggs for it to work?

thankyou in advance :)

If it is a hatch mix you will have to use all the eggs. Hatch mixes usually contain the correct amount of salt for the amount of water it says you use (in your case, 500ml.) So, if you only used some of the hatch mix, you would not have the right amount of salt in the water.

Do you have a lfs that has just the brine shrimp eggs? When I was hatching BBS for my angel fry, I would mix about 1/16th tsp brine eggs with 2 tbsp salt and 1.5 cups warm water every day (can't remember if that was the exact ratio) and then put into a container with an airstone. I think my vial of brine shrimp eggs cost about $5, and lasted for two months of daily hatching.
Theoretically for now you could try to use a portion of the mix you received with the equal portion of water (i.e., if you use 1/3rd the mix, use 1/3rd the amount of water) but I don't know what the hatchery system you bought requires in terms of total water volume.
Can you show us a pic of the 'hatchery' you set up? I can tell you how to DIY a hatchery for the plain eggs with a couple of pop bottles, airstones and tubing, but if your existing hatchery system has a way of holding warm water and some light, we can MacGyver it to be even more efficient.

The important aspects for successfully hatching BBS are: okay eggs, salt, heat, and aeration. I'd try to work with the mix you have now, but seems ridiculous it only gives you a day or two worth of food! Go get some plain BBS eggs and mix them with salt yourself. Your tank water is fine to use. I didn't have a heater set up with my DIY hatchery, so I placed the bottles under a bright light to keep the temp up.
