Brown Algae?

What is brown algae and how can I get rid of it? How did I get it? Why did it happen? My fake plants are covered with brown stuff. LFS said it might be brown algae. Can't be too serious, right? No fish casualities yet.

It's not harmful to the fish. Ottos would love it, as would an apple snail.
Watch how much you feed, and how often you do water changes. You may need to feed less and increase the WC freqruencey.
Live plants would probably help control it too.

I would get some Otto's. I had the same problem, so I picked up 2 of them. They are going crazy over my brown algae. The only problem is that they are too good at getting rid of it. So when your tank is clean you will have to find a new food source for them, and they might not like anything you have to offer.
Thanks lancerland, I ended up doing a 50% w/c on the 11th and again on the 15th. Took all of my fake plants out scrubbed each leaf and dipped them in a bleach solution rinsed several times, cleaned my filter case and tube thingy out, but left the cartridge in (afraid of a mini cycle) on the 15th. So far so good. My pleco is finely sucking on the glass again. He stopped for awhile and was eating leftover flakes. LFS said they don't like brown algae.
