Has anybody used the product Calcium Plus to buffer the ph in a Malawi tank? The product says it can be used as a substrate or in an external filter and helps keep the ph above 8.0.

I have read conflicting reports on its use and that it may irritate the gills of the Malawi. While others recommend it for Africans as well as marine.

Calcium does have the property to harden water but i wouldn't advocate it coz i've seen no one use it. I'd say crushed corals are the safest way to harden your water to around a pH of 8. And strong aeration also pumps up pH when ur water has a certain amount of hardness.

OK Thanks for your reply. If people do not use it perhaps it is not such a good thing.

It appears to contain magnesium as well as calcium though.

It is advertised as Dolomite Gravel Calcium plus.

It quotes "Calcium Plus is a course, calcous gravel with superior p.H. buffering qualities. Ideal for use in Marine and Rift valley aquaria."
