Ok, I'm new also, but i think i can break it down for you. Ammonia is fish wastes, which has to break down into nitrite, which then has to break down into nitrate, which is harmless to fish in small quantities. In order for that to happen, your tank has to develop the natural bacteria that does this. I've read depending on what you do it could take about 6-8 weeks. MY ADVICE: if you dont have fish yet, do a fishless cycle. Its faster ( I think ) and theres directions on the stickies to tell you how to do it

I think because you can add a higher quantity of ammonia to the tank (just buy some at wal mart or something) then do tests on your tank every day to check the levels of the ammonia and nitrite and nitrate. Everyone told me to buy the test kit that has the test tubes and stuff, they said the strips you dip in the water are useless. If you do a fish cycle, then you cant have a high volume of ammonia in there, or it will kill your fish.
