 I have a 2.5 gal. with one female betta and one ADF. I believe the Betta has ich. She has a white patch on her side. I started using a medication and doing 25% water changes this week. The temp is 82F. I thought I read somewhere that ADF's can't get ich. Anyone know for sure? Also, are there any ich meds to avoid with my ADF? How long do I continue the treatment and how will I know when the parasites/cysts are all gone? thanks

I've never read anything purely scientific to say they can't, but everything I've read on forums or heard people say says no, they cannot.

However, I think it would be more prudent to remove the frog to a separate container. With daily water changes he'd be fine in even a 1g tank temporarily. They breathe atmospheric air so you wouldn't need a filter (again, with water changes). Frogs are extremely sensitive to meds; it would not be wise to treat with him in it.

Also, I encourage you to think about using salt and heat instead of medications in treating ich. And are you sure its ich? Patch seems like you're implying something larger than a speckle - which is what ick looks like.

Maybe it is not ich! It is a patch, not a speckle, that is whitish in color. Any ideas? Also, I was concerned about using salt and heat with the frog, should I still sperate him? I have read that they are sometimes treated with salt, so I thought that would be a good preventative if he were treated along with the beta. I can put him in his own space, I have a 1 gal. bowl, I will need to get another heater, though. thanks for your advice.

If it is a patch, it isn't ich. Ich looks like someone sprinkled salt on the fish. Let me find you a picture. I couldn't find a great one, but here is a heavy infestation on a clown loach:

A solid patch is going to be either bacterial or fungal. If its one of those, Maracyn Plus is a good broad spectrum antibiotic and there are several antifungal meds out there.

Maybe can you describe it more? How big is it? How long has it been there? Do you do frequent water changes? Is it fuzzy? Where exactly is it? Does he look okay otherwise? The more info the better chance we can help you:)

Salt and heat would also cause irritation to the frog. I'd still quarantine him in his own bowl for the time being (if your heat is stable, he doesn't need a heater) and keep an eye on him. No sense in treating him if he's not sick.

EDIT: Please don't forget to cover the frog's bowl securely! Use seran wrap and poke holes in it, or place a screen/mesh on top.

ok. I am looking at her right now. The spot is more pink/flesh like in color, but does look like it has a white spot on it. It is raised, and is above her gill. It has been there about 2 weeks. (I started at first using a little salt and raised the temp to 82, I had been keeping it a little cooler) I decided it looked like ich, (memory from a tank in years past) and bought the "Ich Guard" crystals. She also has a salt like white spot further back on her body, below her dorsal fin. Thus far she has been eating and behaving normally.
I was wondering if trating her in another tank would work ok, I wouldn't have to disturb my adf or the plants. What do you think? thanks for your help.
