Can I use shells found on the coast in my tank?

We are in the process of setting up a 55g reef tank. We are in our second week and added our fist piece of LR. My daughters are asking if they can put some large shells they found on our trip to the Oregon coast into the tank. Are they usable, if so do I need to clean/prep them before they are used.

You should boil them before adding them, but they should be safe.
