 Hi, i've only been into the fishing thing for a couple of years and this is my first experiance with Ick. I believe it is ick after searching it and matching up the symptoms of my fish to the disease, Right now my shark is suffering the most with a big spot in the middle of his right side. The reason I need help is because here in Albuquerque NM our fish supply stores are limited to things like Petco and Petsmart and thier employes are not very knowlagable.. I need to Know what kind of treatment i should use for my tank... as i have quite a bit of Diversity.. I just know 1 thing can work for 1 fish while it will kill another, Should i use Salt and Heat? a Mixture treatment? and where could i find it and how much would it cost me? Plz reply soon. Thanks guys and gals.

Heres a picture of the little bugger. he has been acting more aggresive then normal, and like i said he is scratching up on almost anything he can, Sorry it isnt better quality.

The temputure of the tank stays around 80 degrees.

And as far as the water changes go i try to do it as often as I can remember to, as I do not quite know how often i should be doing water changes. I did recently get a water sample checked and the PH seems to be ok. Suddle changes here and there but overall nothing that is too alarming (according to the pet store employee)

Hi that looks like a fungal infection. Probably caused by the constant rubbing (flashing) up against the decor. Treatment should be as easy as dosing the tank with Premifix. You can find it at any of the big chain LFS. You needn't worry about the inhabitants of your tank with this treatment as it is safe for all Fresh water fish and inverts.

More worryingly is the flashing that your fish are doing. This can be cause by several things. Drastic changes in PH. For instance if you haven't done a water change in long time and your Ph start to drop. Sudden changes in temp can also cause this flashing. Normally though when those 2 things are determined not to be the cause, the flashing is caused by external parasites.

Most of the parasite meds are copper based so you will need to remove your snails before you treat the tank.

Also you really need to invest in a test fit. "my PH is fine" is not an answer that we can give any kind of diagnosis with. We need numbers! When you do get them get the liquid drops as the test strips are not very accurate.

I would recommend pimafix or melafix. You really need to test the PH of your tank water AND your tap water. All that flashing against objects probably means something. Get a test kit and test all the parameters and post the results. Do any other fish have any symptoms?

Is this the numbers from the tank water or your tap?

Tank water should have no readable levels of ammonia or nitrite. If you are still showing readings then your tank isn't cycled or you've done something to damage the cycle. Excessive cleaning is usually the root cause of this in established tanks.

Ammonia readings can also cause the flashing.

Unless you had a flood of fry and I mean close to over 300 fish your filter if properly cycled should have handled the extra bioload.

What is your cleaning schedule like?

Daily 20-30% water changes to lower the ammonia.

Well I have been doing the water changes like you said. and it seems like everything is getting back to normal levels. as for the cleaning schedual i try to get a cleaning in once every 1-2 weeks. I noticed the filter hadnt been changed in awhile so that might have been contributing to these problems.
