can someone ID this?

I had that too and was told that it was a type of algae. My Blenny and Scopas Tang took care of that for me though.

im not talking about the green stuff if that's what your refering to.. im talking about the tan stuff.. is it some kind of coral?

tough to say because of the resolution, but if you think it is a coral, it could be a plating Montipora, e.g. Montipora capricornus

is it hard or soft?

that's ok guppy i should have been more clear w/ what i was talking about.. its pretty hard like the rock.. don't know if it's really growing or not (getting bigger) but it is on a few different rocks?

when did you first notice this stuff? what kind of lighting do you have?

i have standard lighting that came with the tank 2 15w bubls lol.. i noticed it when i was settin up the tank.. the person that had the rocks before me were using mh lights i beleive

Structurally it really looks like Montipora capricornus to me and it is quite possible if the other guy had MH. Usually, the M. cap. is orange or green but I have seen beige pieces and it could be bleaching from lack of light
