Can you do a sump with fresh water?

if you could what would be put in one? and how beneficial would it be to have a tank full of cleaner stuff and a pump putting water between them..

I think I get what you are asking. You are really talking about a refugium. A sump is nothing more than a large filter that works via an over flow in the tank.

The answer to both on a FW tank is yes you can. Some people including myself keep cichlids that decimate any plant you try to keep with them. Heck mine even tare up silk plants thinking they are real. The benefit to plants are they help suck up excess nutrients and keep nitrates low.

I have a home made in-tank refugium in my Severum tank that houses hornwort to help keep nitrates low. On my CA/Pleco 125 I have a large sump that is going to have a light added so it too can house hornwort for the same purpose.
