Canister filter maintenance

I have a question about cleaning my Fluval for the first time, it came with Fluval Carbon, foam blocks and Bio Max bio-media. I plan on leaving the Bio Max and foam blocks alone (rinse them in tank water if they need it). I have 2 baskets using the carbon, I would like to swap one out for regular, cheap filter floss and in the other place Marineland Diamond Blend ( I have a ton of it). Does this sound reasonable, I'm not sure I can/should use the floss and Diamond blend. Tank is a 20g hex with 3 serpae tetras and 2 bleeding hearts, it is cycling now (3 weeks in). I guess I should not even touch the filter until the cycle is over, right?

correct, I would resist cleaning anything until you are sure your cycle is finished and your done adding fish. even wait a week or two on top of that.

canisters can go quite a while without a cleaning (2-3 months) but it is advisable to clean them every month or so once they get established especially if you are using lots of floss.

Floss and carbon, ok. I am on the fence re: carbon but if you have it you might as well put it to good use. the only drawback I see to packing that filter full of carbon and floss is you might notice less water flow. and it will clog up sooner.
