I'm just trying to find out what everyone uses in their canister filters? And in what kind of tanks? I know not everyone uses carbon, so I was curious what you use as an alternative for Mechanical and Biological filtration and what are the pros/cons?

I've got a Fluval204 and I have the BioMax Media and Activated Carbon.

It's in a planted 33g. Any suggestions? Thanks. :)

I have one of the Ehiem Ecco canister filters. I use their 2 different kinds of sponges as well as thier substrate. It is specially designed sintered glass. All the bacteria colonize on it because it is a very porous surface. My bio filter never has a problem, and you can rinse the "rocks" and reuse them again. I also put bags of carbon in there from time to time to help keep the water clear.
