i like it, easy to put in and relatively cheap as wave making type devices go...but it cuts flow significantly (which is why i had to get two pumps) so if you do plan to use one i would plan to overpump a good deal
no reason not to keep the fluval as a source of flow, just don't use any of the media...then if you want you can run some carbon or something on occasion
what will the cabon do for me. ok Camaro I think you have told me before but, if I run my fluval with no media just the foam pad and a couple of powerheads to keep the water moving around. Will my tank be ok without a skimmer? or will I need a skimmer in order to toss my filter media like cabon and so on?
no, if you have a choice of a canister or a skimmer, go with the skimmer
i use a canister filter to remove large waste particles...and use carbon regularly
in my opinion, with your bioload you can definitely go without a skimmer for now...when you decide to add more fish i would add a skimmer first...and yah, no pads or anything, think of the fluval as a big pump
