Okay, I am looking here soon to setting up a 55 or 75 gallon freshwater tank. I was curious as to what the best canister filter is out there.

I've did a search both on here and on google, but I want to here what people think. What is the best canister filter and why? Thanks,

I've got a Magnum 350 on my SW, and it works well. Maintainance is easy. I've heard that Eheims are best, but I've never tried anything else for comparison.

I have a eheim 2215 on my freshwater tank and I love it. Its silent, efficent, and cleaning every 6 months is great.

I havent tried any other canisters but I really like eheims.

I have an Eheim 2232 Ecco filter and I love it... Yes, it is probably one of, if not the most expensive canister filter lines out there. But like the old addage, you get what you pay for.

Mine cost me 139.99CDN from Big Al's Online (which is cheaper than Big Al's retail outlets actually).

It's virtually silent (though like any canister, when it's new there will be microscopic bubbles in it, makes a very slight noise, will disappear in 24 hours).

Media trays, makes it easy to customize how you filter your tank, and what you filter it with, easy to clean, incredibly easy to prime (just push down the handle) and then you're good to go.

It's robust, made of high quality materials. Love it.

Would never think about another brand.

Get a Rena or a Fluval. Personally (though I am speaking "out of my a** per se, as I have no experience with Eheims) I think Eheims are like Mercedes or BMW - fancy names that in the end, don't add up to that much of an advantage when all is said and done. I'll grant that it seems they might be more dependable and or durable, but as far as getting the task of filtration done, Rena or Fluval do an excellent job. Anything beyond them seems superfluous.

Renas and some fluvals do not have great reputations for reliability compared to eheims, and fluvals seem to be getting worse though what the newest ones like is a good question. All of them will filter much the same, but if you want silence and reliability, and you want it to last 10 years or so, get an eheim.

I have both a fluval and two Rena's. The fluval works well, but maintance is more of a pain with it than the Rena. For the size, the fluval doesn't have near the flow rate the Rena does either.

If you want a good filter and save some money get the Rena. If you want a good filter that will most likley last a long time then go with eheim.

I am a true fan of the Rena filters.
I currently have 2 XP3's and 1 XP2.
They work great; and for the price can;t be beat.
I too have heard great things about the Eheim filters but have
yet to try one.*thumbsups

if youre going planted, dont get a magnum 350 pro. I got one for mine and I ended scrapping most of the parts because they didnt work well (hoses kink easily) or it was bad for a planted tank (activated carbon, bio-wheels). the only thing I kept was the actual canister. get an eheim, everybody loves theirs.

ive had an eheim 2217 on my 120 for a year now and only opened it twice to clean it. its very quiet, my rena air pump is louder than my filter and you can barely hear the air pump. im going to buy a rena xp3 for my 75 gal because the eheims are pretty pricey but IMO they are worth the money.

Yup broke here too.

I have big and little Fluvals and the big Ehiem wet dry. A 202 on my 55 along with an HOB, 2 404s on my 90 with 2 HOBs and 1 404 on my discus tank. The BIG pricey Ehiem wet dry is stand alone on my planted 75 gal community. I will say I like the Ehiem. I do wish it had more GPH but it does do a great job. If you ever want to run CO2 in line into the filter DO NOT do it on this filter. The way the filter works it causes the gas to build up in the canister then be spit out in waves causing massive fluctuations in the PH.

The fluvals have all been good to me not one hiccup from them. Got them used from a friend and so far they have been running for over a yr now. I did notice that the filtering capabilities wasn't up to par considering how many GPH they move. I found that cutting a piece of filter sheet fromm a wet dry filter to fit between the media trays increased it's fine particulate matter filtering almost 100%.

Both filters allow diversity in the media that you use, and are equal in ease of cleaning. The Fluvals are a little easier to prime.
