well hey...there i was in my lfs...
getting some bloodworms[frozen] for my wifes betta...
as i passed the cardinals in their tank i daydreamed...
'one day soon guys...i'll be taking a dozen of you home'...

but hold...what's this...good grief charlie brown...
a swarm of black neons...newly arrived...and beautiful...
i was thrust into a quandry...head first...'arse over tea-cup'...
these new dudes are stunning...fantastic fish...wow...

so what to do...i had planned on a vivid red cardinal shoal...
but i do have 6 red platties...and a red betta male...
i love my silver cories to bits scooting round the bottom...
maybe i need a silver/black swarm of crazy black neons up top...

checked them out on the 'net...nothing but good reports...
'great community fish'...'school well in larger groups'...
fun to watch as they chase hither and yon...
temp / ph same as my own tank...cardinals may be gone...

Why dont you go with a school of both. They are both beautiful when schooled together. I say go for both.

I have black neons and I think they look really good in a school. They stand out well against plants, too. They did school better when I had 8. I think a big school of one type looks much better than lots of little "schools."

can't do both types...
i have to get 12 hatchets in there...

I'd say it's a good choice. Cardinals are supposedly very hardy once you get them acclimated, but can be picky before they're settled. Black neons are probably hardier from the beginning, and almost certainly hardier than regular neons.

he thought i should wait until the tank was settled...
