Does anyone use black tahitian moon sand as a substrate?

Does it work well with plants?

I was also wondering how easy it is to keep clean ?
I worry that a gravel vac would suck up too much sand.

I dont use that particular kind, but I do use black sand in one of my tanks. I dont have live plants, but apparently sand will work well for a while with them, but over time sand compacts and can crush the roots to death, or just not allow them to grow. That doesnt make for healty plants. Sand is a lot easier to keep clean than gravel, I rarely suck any sand up in my gravel vac and if I do its because I wasnt paying attention and actually put it into the sand. I found I can hold it very close to the sand and not suck any up. The best way to clean it though is to sorta make a circular motion with the vac and they will cause most of the debris to fly off the gound making it easy to catch.
