I just purchased a Rena XP2 for my 55 gallon tank which I will be setting up in the next week or so. The tank also came with a Whisper 60, so I'll be running both filters.

The Rena comes with 4 foam pads, a micro-filtration pad, and Bio-Chem Zorb (looks pretty much like activated charcol). However, I've read where a lot of folks use ceramic rings.

Do you recommend the ceramic rings for my tank? Its a community tank that will have tetras, mollies, guppies, corys, dwarf gouramis, kuhli loaches, and a small pleco.

Thanks!

I don't see why not. It simply provides more bio filtration. I technically have enough *per package stating what size tank it is for* in my 30 gallon for about 100 gallons. I pack it in wherever I can fit it:) lol

I use this same filter package on my 55 too, down to the T. A whisper 60 and rena xp 2.

I definitely recommend the biorings too.

I couldn't fit all the biorings that came in the package in the biomedia filter tray so what I did instead was load them into the back of the whisper. It can be loud, but it's a nice extra form of bio filtration.

I also replaced the whisper "biosponges" (the porous gray sponges beyond the cartridge filter bags) with polyester batting for a final water polish, like the polyfil in the rena.

I have driftwood and the tank has a tendency to slightly tan. The biozorb is wonderful stuff. I run it all the time now, but I use it in the Whisper filter bags. It makes the water sparkle like you've never seen... really looks like the fish are hovering in air instead of water it's so clear.

Where are you finding the Biozorb in a bulk product?
I use the single units that come in the plastic cans. I open the bag and pour the material back into the can.

I don't know if they are sold in bulk. Never seen phoszorb or nitrazorb or any of that stuff in multiple packs.

ok, so you are buying the Bio Zorb in the 55 gallon pack, but opening it up and using it another way? I thought about adding a small stingray filter or something to my tank with some in it to also add more circulation for the hillstream loach. It says do not open the pack, but many things say that. I just didn't know if it was more chunky or a fine powder.

The ceramic rings are a must. W/o them you have no constant source of biofiltration, the pads you will need to wash therefore eliminating their bacteria. Any will do really, just make sure they;re sumwhat reputable and have a fair amount of pore space. Dont get mixed up between prefilter rings and the actual biorings fluval has. I like their bio-rings alot.
