Someone local on CL is letting a 55gal tank go for 20bux. Nothing else - just the tank.

How do I make sure it is for fish and not reptiles???

Google reptile vs fish tank. Might help - I did it and found the following:

There is usually a tag on the bottom of the tank that you can see when you look into the tank... if not you might find a manufacturers label and check their website to see if they made both aquarium and terrariums... I don't think many companies make 100 gallon terrariums because the need was not that great until recently. Most people kept larger reptiles in cages. Dave

No, reptile tanks are NOT the same as fish tanks. Aside from the differences in silicone strength, there is the fact that, especially if it was used as a snake tank, the residues can be extremely toxic to fish. I used a 20gH that was once a snake tank and I ended up losing almost 70% of the fish I had in the tank. My water parameters were constant at 0, 0, 20 (except for small spikes when a fish would die). The only explanation was that it had to be something with the tank. After doing some research, I found out that reptile tanks can be toxic when used for fish, even when washed with bleach (which I never do...I use white vinegar).

Good to know...I thought there might be a difference in glass thickness as well since the aquarium needs to hold the weight of the water where as the reptile tank does not need to do this.

But alas.....the CL person has yet to email me back and goodness gracious me...if they have already sold it I will be all torn up inside....

I once found a 55g and stand that was practically new on Freecycle (sorta like CL but items are free). Owner was out of state on business and the wife wanted it out of the house. Had to pass on that offer (ran out of space for tanks).
