HI,

I have a 37 gallon high that I recently took out of storage. I noticed a little bit of sealent or glue starting to come up on one of the sides on the outside of the tank. There is a about an inch of oak trim around the bottom which is where a small amount of this glue / sealent is pushing out above this.

I put some water in above this and it has not leaked for about 3 days. I just want to make sure that this does not leak before I start to put gravel and more water in. Any suggestions or tips? Is this normal. The aquarium was built in 1992 and is in fairly good shape other than that.

Thanks,
Brian

Sorry, I'm not sure I fully understand what your talking about. Is there anyway you could take a picture of it?

But if it's just on the outside then you probably don't have much to worry about. I've had a couple of tanks were the silicone had become a little loose on the outside and I just took a razor blade to cut it off. Depending on where this is on the tank, filling it with water to just above may not be a good test. If the damage is close to the bottom and you've only got 6 inches of water, then that's a big difference in water pressure than a full tank. I'm not a bit worried about the silicone around the oak trim as I am about the other. I would think about setting it in a garage, or somewhere where you can fill up all the way and if it does leak the water isn't going to cause any damage to anything.

I would think if it was on the outside it would be okay. Sometimes when you store tanks for awhile, especially in heat, or just older tanks in general the silicone can get hard, shrink, or start to fall apart. You might put some thought into resealing it before you set it up for good.
