I have a jack in my 55 w/ a pleco and an old spanner barb :) All of them seem to keep to themselves pretty well as they've lived together for a couple years and I call them the odd couple because I'm not sure I'd purposely put them together, it just happened that way.

Have you ever had anything with your JD before? How big/old is it? Mine seems to be pretty mild mannered and has been with other fish since I got him when he was just a couple inches long...but I wouldn't put anything in with him that would fit in his mouth.

Hello Fishman,

I'd say that you need something equally pugnacious and big...like an Oscar perhaps?

I've never kept Jack Dempseys or Oscars, so I honestly don't know how well they would get along.

I currently only have a four-foot species tank full of mbunas, and even though the dominant male is only about four inches long, he doesn't hesitate to attack my hand, or the sponge, when I am cleaning the inside of the glass.

What's that about biting the hand that feeds you? :)

I have a Jack dempsy as well.. He is not very big, but I had to put him in with my oscars (my convicts had babys) and even though the JD is about 1/3 of their size, he beats the crab out of them... NEEEED a 100 gallon!! anywho... my suggestion would be a green terror... they would put the jack in his place...

i never knew JDs being this aggressive even when not mating season..may the deceased fishes' souls rest in peace. lol. you can never judge a fish by its brand..each are unique..my 3'' jewel cichlid killed its mate..tortured to death 3 convicts before i realized who the culprit was..convicts normally hold their own against jewels but mine bunch had less guts i guess.
