ok for as long as I have been keeping cichlids I have heard that cichlids are verry rock related. Now I have a decent pile of rocks in one end of the tank and a large piece of driftwood on the other end. they seem to be more interested in the driftwood. What it seems like to me is that they are naturally attracted to the most dominant cover in the tank. has anyone ever noticed the same thing?

Not real sure what you are asking. Rocks are nothing more than protective cover for the fish when they feel threatened, sick or injured, or breeding. So if they don't have the need, they most likely aren't going to use it.

And not all cichlids use rocks. There are many species that could care less about rocks and prefer shells or even do all their business in open water. Some do use rocks for cover but only during certain times like when breeding/rearing fry. So just saying that cichlids are very rock related is a pretty vague statement.

Yea, I've seen dramatically different behavior in Cichlids (even of the same species)

I currently keep 3 Varieties.

Severums - Though I provide them with rock structures (Not necessarily needed for them), my largest Sev has chosen his "Cave" but only visits to chase other tank mates out of it.

Convicts - Again, I gave them some rock structure & driftwood however they choose mostly open water (except to spawn).

Kribs - They have rocks as well, but pay no interest to them, actually they seem to really prefer, the terra cotta pots w/holes in them.
