Soon, I will get a new tank and want to devote it towards cichilds becuase they are obviously the only freshwater fish worth having. I know they like caves and stuff, and plants will probably get eaten, so I wanna know HOW to make caves. Do I just buy ornaments with spaces for the fish to swim through? but thats WAY too small for a larger ciclid like an oscar or something. What do ciclides like most to reside in and HOW would that be done? (money is sorta an issue by the way...)

Well 1st off......you are right about the only fish worth keeping ;) LOL.

2nd - you could always do DIY. Check out Cichlid-Forum.com's DIY section. Even check MFT.net's DIY section out......you might find something.

Cichlids like big rocky tanks. You could go as far as putting rocks on top of rocks and form a cave. It doesn't always need to be a full cave just like......and overhang or tunnel that they can hide under.

Hope this helps

Find a cheap source of cheap rocks, and use those. If they keep falling down, use silicon glue to stick em together. Most cichlids like rocky caves, even the ones that are more used to wood cover enviroments.
I thought you said in the saltwater section you were rich, or at least successful with money?

I'm not a big fan of plant pots though they are often ideal. I always hide them under rocks if I put them in.

My advice is not to try to create caves but just put the rocks in and stand back and watch how the fish react. Actually you don't need to create caves but crevaces and it's the various sizes of gaps between the rocks that (a) look natural and (b) work best.

i use clay flower pots for my caves. you can always lay rocks on and around them to make it look more natural.

if you build any sort of structure using rocks i would suggest using a special aquarium putty. it is great for keeping rocks from falling and cave collapsing and trapping fish. it is quite cheap and you can buy it from most good aquatic shops.

I have created caves in my tank by breaking a clay plant pot into 2, then layin' it on the bottom of the tank. Then using 2 rocks, which fit and look good, put them around it to create a 'Cave' look! I think the result is quite good but if you decided to do this dont forget, to be secure, u can use aquarium putty to put them together as kool_sk8a has said.
