I have a 20 gallon tank that my cichlids have rapidly outgrown.(so much for the overcrowding theory)...works when they're small. Anyhow, I'm looking for homes for them however; during the course of this process, some of the fish have ganged up on the "runt" of the tank and pretty much chewed all his fins. He's in isolation and they've all grown back except the tailfin is still kind of funky. I'd like to keep a few of my Red Zebras and reintroduce the Acei that's been chewed on to the tank if and when his tailfin heals up. Any thoughts on the "if" and reintroduction would be greatly appreciated.

The 'overcrowding theory' does not mean the fish will not grow. The theory helps spread out aggression, but you still must take into account the adult size of the fish.

It is difficult to reintroduce an 'outed' cichlid. I've started a new tank with the outed fish and allowed it to be the 'top dog' for awhile before introducing others, but it doesn't always work out.

Good luck with your project!

Is your tank a 20 long or 20 tall? I would think unless you have a 20 long you won't have much luck with cichlids with your tank. I've got a 29 gallon, same footprint as a 20long but more room up top, with 8 dwarf mbunas. I plan to only have 5 or 6 when they are full grown. What size are your fish? Might be best to just keep a pair of convicts or a group of dwarf mbunas or shelldwellers.
